Pekka Olavi Haavisto ( Fin. Pekka Olavi Haavisto ; born , ) is a Finnish politician. Chairman of the Green Union Party (1993-1995, second time from November 3, 2018 to June 15, 2019), chairman of the European Green Party (2000-2006). Minister of the Environment and Development (1995-1999), Minister for Development of Finland (2013-2014) [2] [3]. Candidate for the 2012 presidential election in Finland (he entered the second round with more than a million votes) [4] and 2018 .

Biography
Born March 23, 1958 in Helsinki .
He was a visiting researcher at the Institute of International Affairs, specializing in Russia and issues related to new security threats. He worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Bristol on international environmental issues.
He regularly lectures at the University of Helsinki and the NATO School in Oberammergau .
Political career
In 1987-1995 and 2007 he worked in the leadership of the Green Union Party (in 1993-1995 - the party chairman).
From 1995 to 1999, he worked as Minister of the Environment and Development in .
From 2000 to 2006, he was the chairman of the European Green Party and oversaw the UN environmental programs and was an expert at UNEP.
On October 17, 2013, he was appointed Minister for Development of Finland (Minister for Development Cooperation) in the Katainen cabinet [2] [3] . He replaced another Zeleny representative, Heidi Hautal , who announced her resignation on October 11, 2013, taking responsibility for the fact of illegal pressure from the ministry on the leadership of the state-owned company in 2012 [5] [6] . In Stubb’s office , formed in June 2014, he retained this portfolio, but already in September of that year, the Green Union, in connection with the approval of Stubb’s cabinet to renew the Fennovoima license to build a nuclear power plant, left the ruling coalition [7] .
In connection with the appointment to the ministerial post, he refused to participate in the 2014 European Parliament elections and announced his intention to participate in the 2015 parliamentary elections [8] . The Green Union on them took 5th place and received 15 mandates.
On November 3, 2018, at a party meeting held in Helsinki , he was elected the new chairman of the Green Party, replacing Touko Aalto in this post. His only rival was the former head of the Green’s parliamentary faction, Outi Alanco-Kahiluoto . Haavisto was elected for a term until the next party meeting. [9] As planned, Haavisto did not begin to run for a new term - and on June 15, 2019 at the party congress in Pori, Maria Ohisalo was elected the new leader [10] .
Presidential Election (2012)
On June 11, 2011, Haavisto was nominated by the Green Union Party as a presidential candidate in the 2012 Finnish presidential election [4] .
On January 22, 2012, in the first round of the presidential election, Haavisto won 18.8% of the vote and entered the second round with Sauli Niinistö , the candidate from the National Coalition party, who won 37% of the vote. [11] On February 5, 2012, the second round of elections took place, in which Niinistö won and Haavisto won 1,076,957 (37.4%) of the vote [12] . According to a poll conducted in March 2012 by order of the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper , homosexuality Pekka Haavisto became the second most important reason why a third of voters voted for Sauli Niinistö [13] .
Presidential Election (2018)
On February 12, 2017, Haavisto was nominated by the Green Union Party as a presidential candidate in the 2018 presidential election in Finland [14] . According to him, the current international situation influenced his decision to nominate his candidacy: he considers it necessary during the election campaign to raise issues related to universal values , as well as the future of Finland and its state security [15] . He took second place after the election of Sauli Niinistö , gaining 12.4% of the vote [16] .
Personal life, financial situation
Since 2002, has been part of a same-sex civil partnership withNexar Antonio Flores (born 1978), a native of Ecuador [17] [18] , a stylist in one of Helsinki 's hair salons [19] .
At the beginning of 2012, Haavisto had neither securities nor his own housing, despite an annual income of more than 100,000 euros [20] .
