The station was opened on November 23, 1904, as part of the development of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) network, up to 145th Street near Lenox Avenue. After 3 days, traffic was opened across the line on the IRT White Plains Road Line . Passing the station, a third connecting path is formed between the tracks, which is not used today. From 1995 to 2005, the section of the line from the final Harlem - 148th Street and up to 135th Street was one of the few sections of the New York Metro that do not work at night. Between the stations at night went a shuttle bus. Due to the fact that there was an end station in a closed area, this station became a new temporary end point for 3 .
To the north of the station, the tracks depart, forming the IRT White Plains Road Line , which follows the Bronx and which operates on 2 .
Platforms are made in a mosaic design on the themes: Adam Clayton Powell, Joe Louis , Clara Ward, Louis Armstrong , Charlie Parker , the Harlem Globrotters basketball team, the organization NAACP , and others.
