The championship was won by Ferrari pilot Kimi Raikkonen , with a one-point margin over a pair of McLaren Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso . The Designers Cup was won by the Ferrari team.

The season was overshadowed by espionage scandal over information sold by a Ferrari employee to a McLaren employee . As a result of the investigation, the McLaren team, the leader in the constructors' cup, was deprived of all points in the team standings.

Debutant of the season Lewis Hamilton won his first victory in the 6th race.

Rules

Engines

Homologation of engines comes into force. During the 2007–2010 seasons, teams must use the engines that were used in the last two races of the 2006 season. Limited engine improvements are allowed to be controlled by the FIA.

The rule "two weekends - one engine" no longer applies to the Friday session of free races. Failure or replacement of the motor on Friday is not punishable by a fine. Also on Friday another engine can be used in order to save the main resource.

Tires

After Michelin leaves, there remains one tire supplier - Bridgestone . For each weekend, pilots are provided with 14 sets of β€œdry” rubber of various types: primary (prime) and optional (option, softer). The specific types for each race are determined by Bridgestone. Starting with the Malaysian Grand Prix, optional tires are marked with a white stripe in the middle for a clear visual difference. Two types of rubber for rain conditions are also provided: intermediate (for light rain) and rain.

In a β€œdry” race, each pilot must use at least one set of different types of tires during the race. A race is considered rain if at least one pilot has used intermediate or rain tires, in which case the restriction on the choice of types is lifted.

At the end of each of the two sessions of Friday's free races, pilots must pass one set of main and optional tires, thereby stimulating the activity of teams on Fridays and, accordingly, the entertainment of free races.

Grand Prix Schedule

Two sessions of free arrivals on Friday extended from 60 to 90 minutes each.

Typical Grand Prix Schedule:

FridayPractice 190 minutes
Practice 290 minutes
SaturdayPractice 360 minutes

  • In parentheses, the number of points earned by the McLaren team without taking into account the penalty in the constructors' cup is indicated.
    • At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Maclaren was deprived of points for the unsportsmanlike behavior of pilots (in particular, Fernando Alonso kept Hamilton in the third part of the qualification in the boxes), so you should not take them into account when calculating hypothetically scored points by the team in case of not taking points from it for the whole season, this pilots saved points.
