History

In the late 1980s, German Klapholz began to play in various clubs in Antwerp as a DJ. In 1992 , after traveling to Mexico , he, inspired by Mayan mythology, joined the Hybryds project, performing a ritual ambient [1] . However, as early as the next year, the musician decided to work alone and began recording his own material under the name Ah Cama-Sotz. Klapholz sought to organically combine elements of electronic dance, classical and experimental music [2] .

Since 1993, Ah Cama-Sotz has released thirteen studio albums and performed four times at the prestigious Wave Gothic Treffen Festival in Leipzig [3] . German Klapholz also repeatedly collaborated with other experimental music performers in the framework of Camanecroszcope , Okk-ULTh and other side projects .

Style, influence

According to the musician himself, his early work was largely influenced by Hybryds [1] . The first Klapholtz albums were criticized by music journalists for their “superficiality” and excessive sounding tradition [4] . Beginning with EP Mantra and Rites of the Flesh , the compositions created by the musician more clearly showed elements of electronic dance music and techno [5] , combined with ambient substrates and synthesized guitar parts [6] . Around the mid-2000s, Ah Cama-Sotz began even more actively experimenting with various musical styles, moving away from the classical canons of dark ambient and combining oriental and western European folk motifs [1] . On his later albums, one can find traces of the influence of ritual ambient, ethnic music and industrial, which are fantastically combined and form a unique sound picture [7] [8] [9] .

The sources of inspiration for Ah Cama-Sotz are mainly mythology and occultism . Thus, the 10 Years Bat Vibez concept album consists entirely of “impenetrably dark sacred chants” dedicated to the ancient gods and demons [10] . Almost every of Herman Klapholtz’s works is united by an idea, therefore his albums are better perceived as independent large works, rather than a selection of various compositions [11] .
