Biography
William Klote was born in 1881 in the small town of Sharon Hill, in Pennsylvania.
In 1902 , as a student at Harvard University , he won the intercollegiate tennis championship in singles and doubles (with Edward Leonard ). [2]
Eleven times (between 1901 and 1914 ) was among the ten strongest tennis players in the United States, and was number 1 in 1906 . In the same year, 1906, he won the title at the US Championship in men's singles and, as he later recalled, he "never played better in his life." Confusion of the game Klote added the most difficult victory in the quarterfinals over Fred Alexander , when he in the fifth set was able to recoup from the account 2-5 and 0-40. After successfully completing this meeting, he won the remaining matches without any problems and in the final confidently won 6: 3, 6: 0, 6: 4 and won Beils Wright .
Klot'e went to the US Championship final twice more: in 1904 he lost to Cold Ward , and in 1909 he was defeated in five sets from William Larned . [3]
In 1905, the first and only time he spoke at Wimbledon . And although he already lost in the third round in five games Anthony Wilding , but that match was marked by commentators and tennis historians. The American was unable to take advantage of 2-0 in sets and 40-15 in the third game, and eventually left the court defeated, after three and a half hours of intense struggle. According to the famous tennis historian Wallace Myers, both players in that fight demonstrated elegant beautiful tennis, strength, youthful energy and will to win (Myers: “Both of them were such magnificent examples of youth and energy, they attacked so hard, and they were such valiant fighters ... " ). [four]
Klotje took part in two draws of the Davis Cup . In 1905 , in the semifinal matches, when the Americans played against the French team on the courts of the Royal Club , he scored two rather convincing victories: first, with a score of 6-3 6-4 6-4, he defeated Max Dekyuzhi , and then in the fifth, nothing solving a match in four sets, defeated Maurice Germot. In the finals (in a challenge-round), where the US team was opposed by the UK team, Klot, played only one match, against Sydney Smith , and he was defeated in three sets. [5] In 1909, he played in the final two games and did not play in the challenge round. A total of Klothier held five matches for the USA team in the Davis Cup , and he won four of them. [one]
Twice, in 1935 and in 1936, he won the US Championship in the "father and son" category, paired with William Clot, Jr. [3]
In 1956 he was awarded a place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
He died in Philadelphia, in 1962 , at the age of 80.
Game Style
High powerful Klote preferred to play in the attacking style and after performing the serve he immediately went to the net. According to Reginald Docherty, he copied the style of another American, Malcolm Whitman , although he wasn’t so good and his drive wolf was significantly superior to his game from the back line. [6]
