Biography
Allan Houston was born in Louisville , Kentucky , in the family of basketball player and coach Wade Houston, studied at Bollard High School and played for the school basketball team, and in 1988 helped her win the state championship. After leaving school, Allan entered the University of Tennessee , whose basketball team was coached by his father. For four years in college, he scored 2801 points, becoming the most productive player in university history. In 2011, his 20th number was retired from the university team.
In 1993, Houston was selected in the NBA draft under number 11 by the Detroit Pistons team, which has declined after two league titles in 1989 and 1990. In the debut season, Allan received little playing time, but by the third season he became one of the team’s leading players, especially effective in attacking from a long distance.
Becoming a free agent in 1996, Houston signed a contract with the New York Knicks . He became a key player in the team, which reached the NBA Finals in 1999, and in 2000, the Eastern Conference finals. In 2000 and 2001, Houston played in the NBA All-Star Game , in 2000 became the Olympic champion in the US team . In the 2003/2004 season, he missed about 30 games due to a knee injury, and in the next season he played only in twenty, and in 2005 he actually ended his career. His contract was valid until the end of the 2006/2007 season , in which Houston did not play a single game, but, having received $ 20 million over the past season, was the second most salary player in the NBA. In 2005, when drafting a new collective agreement between players and clubs, the Houston case resulted in a special amnesty clause, according to which a player with an existing contract, who ended his career due to health problems, could not be taken into account when calculating the luxury tax.
In 2007 and 2008, Houston tried to return to the NBA and played for the “New York Knicks” at the pre-season training camp, but due to poor physical condition, he failed to gain a foothold in the team. Having finally completed the player’s career, he received the position of assistant general manager of the Knicks. Houston is a co-owner of UNK NBA, a sportswear company. He also does charity work through his foundation, and in 2008 he arranged fundraising for the presidential campaign of Barack Obama .
