Chinatown ( English Chinatown ) - one of the districts of Melbourne ( Victoria , Australia ). Located on the east side of Little Bourke Street, between the borders of Swanston Street and Spring Street. Known as the longest Chinese settlement of the Western world and the oldest Chinatown of the Southern Hemisphere [1] [2] [3] .
History
Melbourne Chinatown was founded during the gold rush in Victoria , in 1851 , when Chinese prospectors joined the search for gold in the region. Melbourne Chinatown is the oldest in Australia [4] , the oldest Chinese settlement in Australia and the second largest Chinese settlement in the Western world [5] .
In 2010, the first floor of the was redesigned as a visitor center for Melbourne Chinatown [6] .
