Career

Born in London. During the First World War he dropped out of school and went to work as a laboratory assistant at Lime Groove [6] . In 1922 he already worked as an assistant operator and stuntman on the set of the film " Rob Roy ", and in 1928 he shot the first film as the main cameraman. He also shot the first sound film in Great Britain - “White Cargo” of 1929. A pioneer of British color filming, as well as the Cinemascope system. During the Second World War, he, along with Freddy Francis, was engaged in the production of propaganda films. On the set of one of them, “Major Barbara,” Young met David Lean [7] . In 1949, Freddy Young, Guy Green, George Gan founded the BSC - the British guild of cameramen [8] . In the 1950s, he worked in America, on large studio films of the highest category. However, in 1959 he left the MGM studio, focusing on the career of an independent operator. In 1960, producer Sam Spiegel invited Young to become director of Lawrence of Arabia's new film by David Leane. Despite his age (Young was about 60) and the difficulty of working in the desert, he agreed. The film " Lawrence of Arabia " (1962), shot on 65 mm, brought Young his first Oscar. The next two films with David Lean - “Doctor Zhivago” (1965) and “Daughter of Ryan” (1970) also brought Young an Oscar. In the early 1970s, he developed and was one of the first in the world to apply the technology of additional dosed illumination of film to control its photographic latitude [9] . In 1970, he was consecrated to the Knights of the Order of the British Empire. Director of photography in more than 130 films, his career lasted 62 years - the last film he made in 1984. In the 1970s, he wrote the book “The Operator's Work” [10] , and in the 1990s his autobiography “70 Light Years” [11] was published. He died in London, continuing to paint until the last days. In 2003, the International Guild of Cameramen put Young in first place in the top ten most influential cameramen in the history of cinema [12] .

Personal life

He was married to Marjorie Gaffney, an assistant to Alfred Hitchcock, from 1927 to 1964. They had two adopted children. After her death, he married the editor Joan Mordach; in this marriage, his son David was born [13] .
