Biography
Johann Gayer was born on January 7, 1807 in Augsburg. Since 1826 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Clemens Zimmermann. In 1830 he was on sketches in Belgium and France. In 1833, Gayer became a professor at the Polytechnic School of Augsburg. In 1936 he received a prize at the Munich Industrial Exhibition. In 1865, with the closure of the school, he left the post of teacher.
His genre paintings were especially popular in the 1830-1840s. Many of them were known for lithographs . About 180 paintings by Gayer are now exhibited in various museums in Germany, especially in the museum of his native Augsburg. He is considered one of the best German genre painters of the XIX century . [one]
