The station was opened on October 27, 1904 as part of the first phase of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) network. At this time, trains ran from City Hall Station to 145th Street .

In the 1950s there was a lengthening of the station to the south, to 93rd Street. Because of this, 91st Street station was closed, as the distance from the new exit to this station decreased.

North of the station, after about 100th Street, express lines go deeper into the ground, forming the Lenox Avenue line , and turn east, towards Central Park , cross the Eighth Avenue line in the vicinity of station 103th Street (without a change to it and even the station in general in this place), and then north, towards Lenox Avenue, and then to the Bronx. In the same place, after 100th Street, another express route, running between them, which is almost never used, departs from going directly to the north of local routes. [one]

Initially, the station had not only two island platforms, but also two side platforms, which allowed to accelerate the landing and landing of passengers. Entrances from the sidewalks of Broadway led to the side platforms. When the length of the train in the subway was increased from 5 to 10 cars, only the island platforms were extended, and the side platforms were closed - they remained only as part of the entrance to the station. In 2010, a new entrance pavilion was built at the station, located on the Broadway dividing alley, stairs from it were led to island platforms, and the entrances from both southern corners of Broadway and 96th Street to the side platforms were eliminated.

This station was one of three stations where scenes were shot for the 1979 film “ Warriors ”.
