Purin, Alexey Arnoldovich

He graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute, a chemical engineer. In 1982-84 served as a junior officer in the army on the border with Finland. Since 1989, he has been the head of the poetry department, and since 2002, also the criticism department of the St. Petersburg magazine Zvezda.

He was a member of the poetic association that developed in the 70s. around Alexander Kushner , who contrasted himself with both official literature and the then-prosperous “samizdat” underground . The aesthetic principles of this group focused on the “everyday word” by Innocent Annensky and Mandelstam's “longing for world culture” were reflected in Purin’s first book “Ski Track” (coll. Collection “Debut.” L .: Soviet writer, 1987), where, according to the reviewer, “images of reality are refracted through the prism of culture - accumulated memory, spiritual continuity, expanding the meaningful capacity of each image” (Galina Gamper, “Neva”, 1988, No. 11). Poems of this period (1973-1988) are collected in the book “Archaic” (St. Petersburg: Zvezda, 1998), the stylistics of which, in the view of critics, looks like this: “The landscape is rugged, torn apart, uplifted by things that do not find their own places. The fragments of the once holistic archaic cosmos on the surface are adjacent to the objects of the New Age, and these last ones are with signs of the present. Torn from the foundation, rootless things enter into a strange symbiotic relationship ... ”(Sergey Trunev, Volga, 1999, No. 7). The book "Archaic" was awarded the literary prize "Honor and Freedom" of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian PEN Center in 1999.

Eurasia

Criticism attracted the attention of the large cycle "Eurasia" (1983-1985, 1991, 1998) - a lyrical study of army life, which begins with reminiscences from the poem "Snigir" by Gabriel Derzhavin , written on the death of Suvorov . “The Purinsky“ Snigir ”begins to jump where Derzhavinsky jumped” (Kirill Kobrin, “October”, 1996, No. 7). “Eurasia is based on a stylistic (high and low), ethnographic (North, Karelia - place of service and Central Asian soldiers), energetic (external order, supposedly discipline - and internal chaos, contention, debauchery) collisions. Pisces Constellation

The book "Constellation Pisces" is mainly about love. “... Eros, heavily splashing in these verses, is tragic; the despair that sounds in them seems genuine - it, madly and gasping for breath, puts Pisanello and Pazolini, Mtsyri and Marsia near ... Oh, how bright the Constellation of Pisces would burn on some medieval fire with its author, there are so many sacrilege . But their essence is not in insulting reader's innocence, but in the tormenting insight of heavenly love - through the earthly ”( Tatyana Voltskaya ,“ Nevsky Vremya ”, February 6, 1998). One observer called the Pisces Constellation a book of “unnatural or supernatural splendor” (Samuel Lurie, Nevsky Vremya, October 25, 1996).

Poetics

“All of Aleksey Purin’s poems, in essence, are about one thing - about a blaze of passion, about the riddle of the great temptation of life and its great vanity. <...> I'm afraid for many the external eroticism of Purin’s book will overshadow its main theme - the theme of the tragic dying of the tongue, that is culture, that is, everything that is in human beings ”(Alexei Mashevsky,“ New World ”, 2002, No. 6). “Alexei Purin is a recognizable poet. He sees the surroundings from a special perspective. And his poetics are individually colored. First of all, Purin’s verses are characterized by lexical originality. These are 168 pseudo-antique eight-verses about love for the boy Kirn - “a whole novel in eight-verses, the poem“ Lolita “. In addition to the eroticism wonderfully embodied in the plastic language, these verses are filled with cultural associations, games and humor, they are virtuoso and unexpected ”(Elena Ushakova, Voprosy literatury, 1994, No. 4). “This outlandish Upers - succumbing to mystification - managed to solve the most difficult task: to combine violent erotica with high poetry” (Vladimir Sobol, “Evening Petersburg”, March 19, 1996). “Russian poetics, as it were, arranges before us a parade of its aesthetic and stylistic evolution: from Derzhavin and Pushkin to Kushner and Brodsky. And explicit and hidden reminiscences make “The Apocrypha of Theognis” look like a kind of potpourri from the achievements of Russian lyrics of the last centuries ”(Alexey Alov,“ Banner ”, 1998, No. 7).

Essay Purin, devoted mainly to the work of Russian poets of the XX century. and the problems of modern poetry, collected in the books “Memories of Euterpe” (St. Petersburg: Zvezda, 1996), “Lost Allusions” (St. Petersburg: Zvezda, 2001) and “Leaves, color and branch” (St. Petersburg: Zvezda, 2010) . The essayist, according to critics, in many of these works “manages to rise to the artistic level of the writer he is studying” ( Inna Lisnyanskaya , Literaturnaya Gazeta, December 28, 1994). “The atmosphere of the last seriousness surrounds this book, despite all the lightness and playing moments.
