Story
Ellie, the wayward daughter of millionaire Alexander Andrews, against his will, marries the aviator and playboy King Westley. Father as a punishment keeps her locked up on a yacht, but Ellie manages to escape from the cabin and jump overboard. Once out on the beach, the girl gets on a bus to New York , where Peter Warne, the unsuccessful reporter who had just been fired by his editor, becomes her companion.
At the bus stop the girls steal a suitcase. Despite the fact that between Peter and Ellie at first glance there was a mutual hostility, he tries to catch up with the thief, but to no avail. When the bus stops again, Ellie does not have time to return to his departure and discovers that Peter has stayed too - to return her dropped bus ticket and show the newspaper, where Ellie’s portrait is printed and her disappearance has been announced. Again exchanging sharp words, they wait for the next bus, but at night a thunderstorm begins, the rain blurs the road, and the driver drops the passengers.
Pretending to save the spouses, Peter and Ellie rent a room in a cheap hotel. Peter promises to help the girl get to King on the condition that she give him an exclusive interview. In fact, he leaves her no choice and, in case she does not agree to the deal, threatens to give it to her father. While he pulls the rope between their beds and hangs a blanket on her - the wall of Jericho, as Peter says this improvised screen, - Ellie hesitates, accepts his conditions, and they go to bed. The next morning, while Peter and Ellie are preparing to leave, they hear the voices of detectives coming from the street, which her father sent in search of the girl. In order to remain unrecognized, they play out a performance in front of detectives - Ally hides her face while brushing her hair and sobs, and Peter shouts at her, portraying an angry husband. When the detectives leave, the couple get on the bus to continue the journey.
Meanwhile, Andrews-father awards a reward of 10 thousand dollars for information on the whereabouts of his daughter. After reading about this in the newspaper, fellow traveler Ellie and Peter named Oscar Shapley finds out the girl and invites Peter to share the award. Peter is forced to pretend to be the gangster who abducted Ellie, after which Shepley cowardly retreats. The couple, worried that Shapley might still decide to contact Mr. Andrews, is getting off the bus. After spending the night in a haystack, where the first romantic vibes run through between them, they try to hitchhike the next morning.
Peter shows Ellie some of her favorite methods of catching the car, but after none of them works, the girl stops the car in his own way - lifting her skirt and showing her legs. At the bus stop, the driver takes away Peter's suitcase, but he catches up with the thief and steals his car.
Meanwhile, Mr. Andrews is putting a new ad in the newspaper, saying that he no longer objects to the union of his daughter and King Westley, which means she has no reason to hide anymore. After reading the newspaper, Ellie hides it from Peter and insists that they stay overnight at the hotel, although it only takes three hours to get to New York. That night, she confesses to Peter in love and begs him to take her away, but he refuses.
When the girl falls asleep, Peter hurries to his editor and borrows money from him to start a new life with Ellie. In his absence, an elderly couple who own the hotel, concludes that the guests fled without paying, and breaks into the room where Ellie sleeps. The girl does not know where Peter left and why, she realizes that he left her, and since she has no money to pay for the room, she contacts her father by phone and agrees to return. While Peter is driving back to the hotel, in a passing car, he sees Ally and, in turn, concludes that it was she who abandoned him.
Next, Mr. Andrews, to please his daughter, is going to arrange her re-marriage with King. Shortly before the ceremony, Ellie confesses that she is in love with Peter, but since he despises her, she will still marry Westley. The father shows his daughter a letter from the reporter, in which he asks to accept him on a financial matter, and both of them conclude that Peter wants to receive a reward. However, arriving at the Andrews' house, Peter lays a bill of only $ 39 60 cents - that is, the amount that the trip cost him - but refuses to pay, admitting under the pressure of Mr. Andrews that he loved his daughter. While her father leads Ellie to the altar, he talks about meeting with Peter and his confession and convinces her that it is not too late to cancel the wedding. Delighted Ellie escapes from the wedding. Ellie and Peter are reunited at the hotel and are asked to deliver a horn and a blanket to their rooms. At the end of the picture, the sounds of the forge are heard and the “Jericho Wall” separating the lovers falls to the floor.
