History
The church was built on the right bank of the Kamenka River. Nearby, at the confluence of the river Mzhary into Kamenka, in ancient times there was a Mikhailov settlement belonging to the brother of Vsevolod Mikhalka [1] . On the contrary, in the bend of Kamenka, to this day there is an extensive Mikhailovsky meadow, surrounded on three sides by the riverbed. Over the centuries, the meadow was used for pasturing cattle: a wooden fence with a single undiscovered river on the north side did not allow cattle to disperse.
In the XV century, on the site of the former Mikhailov settlement, the village of Mikhailova stood on the side. The land of Mikhailovsky Meadows was the property of the Suzdal Archbishop, and then transferred to the urban village.
In ancient times there were Slavic pagan barrows, the famous archaeological monument Mzharsky burial ground (359 barrows) between Mzhara and Kamenka. It was discovered in 1851 by Count S. Uvarov and studied in the XX century [2] .
The Church of Alexander Nevsky is practically the only temple in Suzdal, made in the pseudo-Russian style. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was another religious building in the city in this style - the Sretenskaya refectory church in the Rizopolozhensky monastery (1882). Her fate was unsuccessful: the temple did not survive the years of Soviet power.
During the years of Soviet power, the church was abandoned. At the beginning of the XXI century, it was restored and enclosed with a fence along with a nearby ensemble from the bell tower and two churches of Michael the Archangel and Flora and Laurus .
Architecture
Cross-shaped in plan, the building of the church is made of brick. The abundance of decor - elegant kokoshniki , trim , brick pattern, cornices and columns - indicates the desire of builders to bring the church closer to the old Russian pattern . The church is crowned by a small wide tent with a small onion cupola on a painted drum .
