Comptroller of Israel

Israeli Comptroller ( Hebrew מבקר המדינה - Mevaker ha-medina; Arabic. مراقب الدولة ) is an official in Israel who is responsible for overseeing the activities of the executive branch, state enterprises and institutions, political parties, as well as those non-governmental organizations in respect of which this is established by law. The state controller also performs the functions of an ombudsman , considering citizens' complaints about the actions of state institutions.

The State Comptroller acts on the basis of the basic law “On the State Comptroller”, which was adopted by the Knesset on February 15, 1988. The state controller is elected by secret ballot for members of the Knesset for one seven-year term. It is independent of the government and is accountable only to the Knesset, for its removal from office requires a qualified majority of 2/3 of the votes of the members of the Knesset. Twice a year, the National Audit Office submits to the Knesset a report on current activities and once a year - the results of inspections of individual institutions and recommendations for eliminating deficiencies. The choice of institutions and areas of activity for verification is the responsibility of the State Controller himself. For the duration of the cadence, he cannot hold any other post, be a member of the Knesset, or be a member of a political party.

The activities of the State Comptroller are ensured by the State Audit Office ( Hebrew משרד מבקר המדינה ), which employs lawyers , auditors and other specialists. The budget of the State Audit Office is set directly by the Knesset Finance Commission.

Sign of the Office of the State Comptroller
