Liu Zige was born in 1989 in Benxi , Liaoning Province. On the international stage, she made her debut in 2005, at the World Championships, but there she finished only the 20th, and was not noticed by the public. Therefore, her performance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing caused a sensation: this unknown Chinese woman not only finished the first 200 m butterfly stroke, but also set a new world record. At the 2009 World Championships, she was second at the same distance, half a second behind Jessica Schipper from Australia, and third at the 2011 World Championships .
