The station was opened on July 1, 1918, as part of the development of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) network, which at that time dominated as a separate subway, in Manhattan from Times Square / 42nd Street to South Ferry. This site was serviced by a shuttle until the construction of the line and stations was completed, on July 1, 1918.
The station is decorated with mosaics.
This is the only operating station in Manhattan under 18th Street. The other is located on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and has been closed since 1948.
