The station was opened on June 3, 1917, as part of the development of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) network, which at that time dominated as a separate metro in Manhattan from Times Square / 42nd Street to South Ferry. This site was serviced by a shuttle until the construction of the line and stations was completed, on July 1, 1918.

The station is represented by three platforms - two lateral and one island. Lateral platforms serve local trains ( 2 at night, 1 always), the island serves expresses 2 and 3 . There are only three stations in the entire system of stations with this arrangement of platforms, the other two - Atlantic Avenue - Barclays Center on the Eastern Parkway line and the neighboring 34th Street - Pennsylvania Station on the Eighth Avenue line . Usually on a 4-track express station, two platforms are made, each of which serves two tracks in the same direction; it was done differently so that the crowd on the platform, and so large due to the proximity of the train station, would not increase due to passengers changing between local and express trains.

The station is decorated with mosaics.
