Le Jingyi was born in 1975 in Shanghai . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, she won the silver medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and was the 6th in the 100m race. In 1993, she became the PRC champion in the 100m race and won 5 gold medals in 1 World Championships in short water swimming , while setting several world records. In addition, in 1993 she won two Universiade gold medals.

In 1994, Le Jingyi won four gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Rome , setting another world record. In 1995, she won three gold medals at the 2nd World Short Course Swimming Championships . At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, she won one gold medal and two silver medals. In 1997, Le Jingyi won one of the gold and two silver medals of the Pacific Games, and also took two gold and two bronze medals at the 3rd World Championships in short water swimming .

Despite the fact that Le Jingyi won the Olympic Games and World Championships more than once, she never managed to win the Asian Games. In 1994, at the Summer Asian Games in Hiroshima, Le Jingyi set a record for playing 50 meters, but was disqualified for a false start; the Chinese team won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, but was stripped of it after a test for doping with Lu Bin gave a positive result.

Due to her athletic physique, Le Jingyi, like other Chinese athletes in the mid-1990s, was suspected of using steroids, but unlike others, her doping tests never gave a positive result.
