The Ministry of Defense has declared the main goal to protect the United Kingdom and its interests and to strengthen international peace and stability. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, the Department of Defense does not provide any short-term opportunity for a conventional military threat and, instead, defines the main threats to British interests as weapons of mass destruction, international terrorism and failed states . The Defense Ministry also carries out ongoing command and control of the armed forces, develops contingency plans, and procures weapons.
