Location and appearance
The Pozdnyakova Tower is located on Timiryazev Street as part of the longest surviving sections of the fortress wall, between the Veselukha and Orel towers (both survived). It is a quadrangular small tower.
Currently, the tower is being actively restored , the roof is laid. There are no ceilings inside the tower, which makes the passage to the Veselukha tower very difficult. Passage to the tower through the stairs with the brooms is possible, but the entrances to the tower are closed with metal bars. The tower is currently not in use.
History
The Pozdnyakova tower was damaged during the siege of Smolensk in 1609 - 1611 by the Polish troops, and then during the siege by the Moscow army of the governor Shein in 1632 - 1634 . During the first siege, one of the most important sections of the assault was near the tower, and during the second siege, a mine undermining was carried out from the Devil's Ditch (territory of the historic Rachevka district), but it was not completed until the Polish defenders approached reinforcements. The remains of a dig were visible until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1706, the towers of Pozdnyakova and Oryol were protected by an earthen rampart, which was also visible until the beginning of the 20th century.
It suffered during the Great Patriotic War . In 1941 - 1943, the roof covering the tower was destroyed, and therefore the tower began to decay.
