History
In 1898, during the “ Hundred Days of Reforms, ” Emperor Guangxu issued a decree establishing the capital’s Teacher’s Chambers. Reforms were stopped by Empress Cixi , but the subsequent defeat of the Ichtuan rebellion by the Western powers soon showed that China needed reforms, and in 1901 began to implement the decree. On December 17, 1901, in the Jingshan Park , studies began at a university called the Metropolitan Teacher’s Chambers (京师 大 学堂). The decree said that they should separately study “in the usual way”, and separately - “in the special way,” and therefore there were two departments in the university: “The Institution of Employees and Students” (仕 学 馆) and “The Institution of Teachers” (师范馆). Based on the first Institution, Peking University was subsequently created, the second in 1904 was renamed the Department of Higher Class Teachers (优 级 师 范科). In May 1908, the Department of Higher Class Teachers of the Metropolitan Teachers' Chambers was transformed into the Metropolitan Teachers College of Higher Class Teachers (京师 优 级 师范 学堂). It is from this moment that the history of China's first teacher training institution begins.
In May 1912, the Metropolitan Teacher’s College of Higher Class Teachers changed its name to the Beijing Higher Pedagogical College (北京 高等 师范学校). In 1923, three research departments were opened at the university - for the study of Chinese, English and historical and geographical, as a result of which it turned from a simple educational institution into an educational and research one. In 1923, the Beijing Higher Teacher Training School was officially renamed the Pedagogical University (师范大学).
In July 1931, Beiping Pedagogical University was merged with Beiping Women's Pedagogical University into the State Beiping Pedagogical University (国立 北平 师范大学), consisting of the Pedagogical Institute (教育 学院), the Humanities Institute (文 学院), the Natural Sciences Institute (理 学院), and graduate school (研究院).
When the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937, the Beiping Normal University was evacuated to Xi'an , where, together with the State Beiping University and the State Beiyang Polytechnic Institute, it was merged into Xi'an Temporary University (西安 临时 大学). In the fall of 1938, the university moved to Hanzhong and changed its name to Northwestern Unified State University (国立 西北 联合 大学), and the Beiping Normal University thus became the Pedagogical Institute of the Northwestern Unified University.
In 1939, the institute was renamed the Northwest Pedagogical Institute (西北 师范 学院), and in 1940 moved to Lanzhou . After the war, in the fall of 1946, the institute returned to Beiping , and Northwest University and Northwest Pedagogical University developed on its basis in Lanzhou.
In early 1949, Beiping was taken by the Communists , and the old name “Beijing” was returned to the city; the university was accordingly renamed the Beijing Normal University (北京 师范大学). In the early 1950s, the reorganization of the educational system in the Soviet style was carried out in the PRC , and the Beiping University of China, the Faculty of Education of Yanjing University , the pedagogical graduate school of the People’s University of China and the Catholic University of Beijing were transferred to the Beijing Pedagogical University; The new rector was the former rector of the Catholic University, the famous historian Chen Heng. Now the university had over 340 teachers and more than 2,300 students. In 1954, the university moved to a new campus, which it still has.
In 1996, Beijing Normal University was included in the number of universities that fell into Project 211 , and in 2002, among the universities that fell into Project 985 .
In 2002, at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the university, the asteroid “8050 Beishida” discovered in 1996 was named after the university.
