Construction History

Laid down on February 14, 1912 at the English shipyard Vickers Armstrong in Barrow-in-Furness . Launched on June 18, 1913 , included in the Royal Australian Navy on February 28, 1914, together with the same type AE1 . The commander of the boat was appointed Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Navy of Great Britain, Henry Stocker ( born Henry HGD Stoker ) [1] . Soon, both boats left England for Sydney . The Royal Navy officers commanded both boats, and crews were recruited from both British and Australian sailors. Submarines arrived in Sydney on May 24, 1914 [1] , completing the longest submarine transition at that time [2] .

Service History

The start of World War I

After the outbreak of World War I, both boats became part of the Australian Naval Expeditionary Force, aimed at capturing German New Guinea [3] . During the capture of New Guinea, the homogeneous AE1 disappeared without a trace [3] . After the surrender of the German colonies, AE2, together with the battlecruiser Australia patrolled the area near Fiji , and then got up for repairs in Sydney [4] .

AE2 remained the only submarine in the region and its commander Henry Stocker proposed relocating the boat to European waters. The proposal was approved by the Australian Navy and the British Admiralty. On December 31, 1914, AE2 left Albany as part of an Australian convoy ( Eng. AIF Convoy 2 ), going in a tug of military transport Berrima [4] . Among the sixteen convoy vessels, the submarine was the only full-fledged warship. The Admiralty believed that after the battle at the Cocos Islands, shipping in the Indian Ocean was not to be protected from anyone [5] . On January 28, 1915, AE2 arrived in Port Said and was assigned to the British 2nd Submarine Flotilla. At the new theater, the tasks of the boat included patrol service in the area of the Dardanelles operation [4] [6] .
