Toledo ( English Toledo District ) - one of the 6 districts of Belize ; located in the southern part of the country. According to 2010 data, the population is 30 538 people. The population density is 6.92 people / km². The administrative center is the city of Punta Gorda . Belize's only county where indigenous peoples make up the majority of the population; 61% of the inhabitants are Mayan Indians (13 691 people - Kecchi, 4507 people - Mopan, and 24 people - Mayan Yukatecs) [3] .

History
On the territory of the district there are several ruins of ancient Mayan buildings. The archaeological site of Nimes-Lee-Punit belongs to the classical period; located 40 km north of Punta Gorda [4] . Another archaeological site, the well-preserved ancient city of Lubaantun , is located 30 km northwest of the administrative center of the district [5] .
Geography
It borders with Guatemala (in the west and south) and with the districts of Cayo (in the north-west) and Stann Creek (in the north-east). In the east and southeast it is washed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea . The area is 4413 km².
Economics
Toledo's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture. The main crops grown in the district are legumes, corn, rice and cocoa. Local farmers also grow: coffee, yams, sweet potatoes, chili peppers, avocados, oranges, etc. There is fishing. Recently, the tourism industry has been developing rapidly. The county’s main thoroughfare is the Southern Highway , which connects the cities of Dangriga and Punta Gorda.
