Luzhitsky dialect

Luzhitsky dialects ( German Lausitzisch ) are German dialects that belong to the East Middle German dialect group . They are common in the Puddle in eastern Saxony and in the south of Brandenburg . Luzhitsky dialects are related to the Thuringian-Saxon , Berlin-Brandenburg and Silesian dialects , therefore, sometimes the name “Luzick-Silesian dialect” ( German Lausitz-Schlesisch ) is applied to them.

Classification

The Linguasphere Register (1999/2000, p. 433) divides the Luga dialects into five parts:

  • Novoluzhitsky dialect ( Neulausitzisch ) - Bautzen (Saxony);
  • Nizhneluzhitsky dialect ( Niederlausitzisch ) - Cottbus , Spreewald ( Brandenburg ), Hoyersverda , Weisswasser (Saxony);
  • Verhneluzhitsky dialect ( Oberlausitzisch ) - the border region with the Czech Republic between Steinigtwolmsdorf and Zittau , as well as nearby regions;
  • East Luzhitsky dialect ( Ostlausitzisch ) - Goerlitz (Saxony);
  • West Luzick dialect ( Westlausitzisch ) - Bischofswerda and Kamenz (Saxony).

Dialect Boundaries

In reality, a clear separation of dialects is impossible, since the exact boundaries are not defined, however, German dialectology has enough material to define certain cities and towns as belonging to or not belonging to one or another dialect.

Feature

Luzhitsky (and in particular Lower Luzhitsky) is close, rather, to the Berlin dialect . A characteristic feature of the Upper Luzhitsky is the retroflexive pronunciation [ɻ] , which was common in many parts of Silesia. In Bautzen, Goerlitz and Hoyersverde also speak very good literary German ( German Hochdeutsch ).
