Siebe Gorman Proto

Siebe Gorman Proto , or Proto , is a type of rebreather developed by Siebe Gorman . This rebreather is an industrial breathing apparatus and is not suitable for scuba diving. This unit was produced from about 1914 to the 1960s. Not to be confused with the proton rebreather, which was also produced by Siebe Gorman.

The respiratory bag of this device was located in front at the level of the chest. One or less often two oxygen tanks were located at the back at the level of the lower back. The duration of such an apparatus was from an hour to two, depending on the size and number of oxygen cylinders. The absorbent , produced under the name Protosorb , was stored in the lower part of the respiratory sac, held back by a perforated tissue septum.

Two breathing tubes of the device came out of the breathing bag and led the air to the mouthpiece (used with goggles) or an industrial-type mask covering the entire face with curved glass and an internal mask for breathing with the mouth and nose. The canister on the front of the breathing bag was intended for looping gas cooling, as the result of carbon dioxide absorption was heating, which was neutralized by cool water underwater conditions, but was unacceptable in industrial conditions, for example, when working in deep mines.

Some manufactured devices were equipped with a whistle, which warned of low pressure in an oxygen cylinder.

Usage

These devices were used by firefighters , rescuers in coal mines , long before the advent of self-contained breathing apparatus based on the scuba principle.

In 1908, Proto began to be used by rescuers of the newly formed rescue station to service mines near Howe Bridge [1] .

The first version of Proto was designed by Fluss and Davis around 1906-1910. It had an equal balance between the front and rear, and did not have protrusions on the rear side that could prevent the owner from climbing through narrow passages. More vulnerable parts of the device were in front in the field of view of the owner. The pressure reducing valve was a constant type. [2]
