History

The 101st Motorized Division Trieste was formed in 1939 on the basis of the 8th Infantry Division Po, and until 1941 was in Italy in reserve. Then sent to Albania.

In August 1941 she was sent to Libya ( North Africa ) as part of the 20th Motorized Corps under the command of General Gaston Gambar, together with the 132nd Ariete Tank Division . The division participated in all the main operations in the Libyan desert : the North African operation (1941) , the Battle of Ghazal (1942), the Battle of Bir Hakeim , the First battle of El Alamein and the Second battle of El Alamein , where it was surrounded and almost completely destroyed. Its remnants, together with the remnants of the 132nd Panzer Division Ariete and the 133rd Panzer Division Trieste, were consolidated into a single combat group, Ariete, which was destroyed six months later - in March-April 1943 in Tunisia .
