Biography
Wessel Marais was born in the Cape Province in 1929 .
Marais began his career at the National Herbarium in 1952 , after receiving a master's degree in botany from Pretoria University .
He spent extensive botanical expeditions, collecting plants from 1952 to 1976 in Turkey , in Botswana , Lesotho , Namibia , in the Republic of South Africa .
From 1953 to 1955, Marais was director of the Albany Museum Herbarium de Grahamstown . In 1957, he left the country to be a liaison officer for the Royal Q. Botanical Gardens until 1965 .
