Biography
Came from an old noble family. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich for his faithful service in the 1670s granted his ancestors, tradesmen Stepan Semenov and Samoil Stepanov, estates "in the Shatsky district , in the Borisoglebsky camp of the Tambov province "; one of the villages, Matyunino, subsequently received the name Barsuki, from which came the surname of the Barsukov family, most of whose representatives were in military service. Nikolai Platonovich Barsukov was born in Lipetsk, Tambov province on November 8 ( 20 ), 1838 in the family of lieutenant [1] Platon Aleksandrovich Barsukov.
Of the four sons of P. A. Barsukov - Nikolai, Alexander, Ivan, Mikhail - the first three became famous historians and writers: Alexander Platonovich Barsukov (1839-1914) - historian, heraldist and genealogist, author of works on genealogy and history of the Russian nobility, and also a multi-volume edition of the Rod Sheremetevs. Ivan Platonovich Barsukov (1841-1906) is known as the author of a book about Metropolitan Innocent (Veniaminov) and the publisher of Creations Innocent (1887) [2] , as well as the author of a monograph on N. N. Muravyov-Amursky .
He spent his childhood in his father’s estate - the village of Ivanovka, Kozlovsky district [3] .
He studied at the Voronezh Cadet Corps , in 1859-1861 he was a volunteer at St. Petersburg University .
In 1863 he entered the service of the archaeographic commission [4] . In the 1870s, he was an assistant director of the archives of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church , then he managed the archives of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire .
Together with Afanasy Fyodorovich Bychkov, he compiled “ A Index to Eight Volumes of the Complete Collection of Russian Chronicles ” (St. Petersburg, 1868).
A lot of historical materials collected by Barsukov were published in the Russian Archive and Russian Antiquity . Among other things, he composed a detailed biography of M.P. Pogodin and a biography of P.M. Stroev ( see below in the list of works ).
Nikolai Platonovich Barsukov died on November 23 ( December 6 ), 1906 in St. Petersburg [5] .
