Military transport - a converted or specially built ship designed for the transport of military units and military equipment.
The history of military transports dates back to the specialized Greek ships for transporting infantrymen - hoplitagagos . Military transports were actively used during the First and Second World Wars, especially Great Britain, its dominions and the USA. The main requirements for military transport were speed and suitability for carrying passengers - these criteria were most fully met by converted passenger liners , such as, for example, Aquitaine, Mauritania, Olympic, Queen Mary.
Due to the lack of large troop movements, the development of aviation and specialized landing ships, the use of military transports basically stopped. However, in 1982, Great Britain was requisitioned and during the hostilities converted into military transports liners SS Canberra , RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 , and the ferry Nordic Ferry . [one]
