Biography
Born in the family of the owner of textile stores. He graduated in law at the universities of Heidelberg, Paris and Munich.
In 1956 he entered the ranks of the CDU and became involved in active political activity. Since 1973 - Member of the Federal Council of the CDU.
- 1961-1962 - expert in the internal administration of the state of Baden-Württemberg,
- 1962-1964 - Parliamentary Advisor to the Land Parliament of Baden-Württemberg,
- 1964-1965 - Advisor to the government of the Goeppingen district.
- 1965-1988 - deputy of the Bundestag,
- 1969-1972 - Deputy Chairman of the CDU / CSU faction,
- 1976-1980 - Chairman of the German Bundestag Defense Committee,
- 1982-1988 - Minister of Defense of Germany,
- Since 1988 - NATO Secretary General.
Died of cancer in 1994.
He had the military rank of colonel of reserve and the qualification of a military pilot of the 1st class, which he received after completing training programs for reserve officers of the Air Force. Periodically performed flights on military aircraft, the total raid - more than 1000 hours.
