History
Due to the prevailing post-war housing crisis in the 1950s, up to 12,000 families were registered in Karlsruhe as looking for an apartment. Gunter Klotz, then chief mayor, was the generator of ideas for the district. He was looking for new, short-term housing solutions [1] [2] .
At first the area was called Nord-Ost. In 1963, 8264 residents were already registered in 2374 residential units. Along with a large number of apartments for rent, there were also numerous single-family homes and row houses, so the mixed population from different population groups in terms of income lived together. Due to the aging and death of many initial homeowners, there was a change in living standards and the settlement began to prevail mainly in large apartment buildings.
In the 1970s, Waldstadt expanded to the east with a development site located on the territory of the former field. With the creation of the Europäische Schule Karlsruhe in Karlsruhe, the area was further expanded [1] [2] .
Economics and Infrastructure
Infrastructure
Initially, the creation of infrastructure lagged behind the construction of residential buildings. Today, Waldstadt has good infrastructure with 7 kindergartens, 5 schools, 3 churches [3] , 3 student dormitories and 2 nursing homes. There are 75 more stores, although the smallest of them are fighting for survival, competing with large ones. Waldstadt has many cultural sites. There is the Waltstadt Chamber Orchestra [4] [5] , the Waltstadt Choir, a theater, and also a library [6] . For a long time there were not enough restaurants, cafes and pubs. Thus, there were no specialized leisure facilities for young people of Waldstadt, however, the situation improved in early 2008 after the opening of a youth club [7] .
Sport
In the sports park "Traugott-Bender" ("Traugott-Bender-Sportpark") there is an opportunity to practice almost any sport, there is also a pool [8] .
Transport
Waldstadt is connected by tram line No. 4 leading to the Main Station and to the city center, where transfers to other tram lines are possible.
