Jacob Christoph Rad ( German: Jacob Christoph Rad ; March 25, 1799 , Reinfelden , Switzerland - October 13, 1871 , Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) - a Czech scientist and entrepreneur of Swiss origin. Inventor of the method for the production of lump refined sugar .
Biography
In 1833, the first sugar refinery in the Habsburg Empire opened in the Moravian town of Dacice .
In 1840, a new manager, J.K. Rad, was invited to an enterprise from Vienna. Shortly before that, he had already become famous as the author of the optical telegraph project from Vienna to Milan . Under the leadership of the new director, things went well at the plant. Dacice sold their sugar not only in the Czech Republic and Moravia, but also in the Austrian border. Sugar at that time was produced in the form of large heads, which were then pricked.
Invention
Ya. K. Rad invented a machine for making pressed sugar in the form of cubes after his wife was severely cut when chopping a sugar head . After 2-3 months, the Swiss wife received a gift from her husband - a box with 350 pieces of sugar, white and red. The invention of the Rada was released in 1841, but mass production of lump refined sugar began only after many months. He applied for a patent and a license for the production of lump sugar. I received both in the winter of 1843. Only after this was J.K. Rad able to begin production experiments. In the fall of 1843, the first lump sugar appeared on sale.
In Vienna, dachitsky sugar by J. K. Rada was sold under the name Tea , in packs of 250 pieces.
The technology for making lump sugar was as follows: square holes in a brass board were filled with icing sugar, which was then placed on a copper board. Under a special press, the powder was compressed to half its original volume. Finished pieces were dried for 12 hours, and then they began to pack.
Sugar production in Dacice ceased in 1852. The conditions for growing sugar beets in the area of the Czech city were unfavorable, so they had to bring raw materials from afar, which was too unprofitable. Even the lump sugar production line could not save the plant from bankruptcy . Y. K. Rad could not correct the situation and returned to Vienna.
The invention of Parliament was soon forgotten. Then the merits of the discoverer were attributed to other people. But in the 1930s, it was proved that it was Jacob Christoph Rad who first began the production of lump sugar.
