History
Pilgrim fathers , sailing from England on the Mayflower , first stopped at Cape Cape Cod , where they arrived on November 21, 1620, after 67 days of travel. On the day of their arrival at Cape Cod, they adopted the Mayflower Compact ( English Mayflower Compact ), which became one of the first symbols of the independent way of life of the colonists. After five weeks, the pilgrims headed to the location of the Plymouth colony on the western side of Cape Cod Bay, where Plymouth is now located.
Although the original idea of building the monument belonged to the 1820s, in reality, the design began only in 1850, and the cornerstone was laid in 1859. The overall design of the monument was designed by Boston architect Emmett Billings ( Hammatt Billings ) [2] . Construction of the monument was delayed until 1888, and the official opening took place on August 1, 1889.
On August 30, 1974, this monument was included in the National Register of Historic Places of the USA (under the number 74002033) [3] . Until 2001, the monument was owned by the Pilgrim Society ( Pilgrim Society ), and then was transferred to the state of Massachusetts [1] .
