Title

Hipolito Ruiz Lopez and Jose Pavon named the genus Malesherbia in honor of the famous French philosopher and statesman Guillaume-Chretien de Malzerba (1721-1794).

Botanical Description

Most members of the genus are shrubs or shrubs reaching 1.5 m in height, but some grow up to 2-3 m. One or two species are annual herbaceous plants . All parts of the plants are covered with glandular hairs, with an unpleasant odor. The leaves are simple, less often lobed, arranged alternately, sessile or on short petioles . The flowers are single or collected in racemose inflorescences , simple, with 5 petals , sepals and stamens . The fruits are boxes . Seeds are single or numerous, ovoid, with fleshy endosperm .

Distribution

Malceria species grow exclusively in South America - from central Chile and Argentina to central Peru .

Taxonomy

The genus Malberbia is currently included in the subfamily Malesherbioideae of the Passifloraceae family.
