Vasak Ishkhanik

“... Meanwhile, Ishkhan Sisakana, affectionately nicknamed Ishkhanik, who led his life along a path close to God and the pious, died and was put in the tomb of his ancestors. And then after him the Principality was inherited by his brother Ashot, who was just as meek and peace-loving, pious and God-fearing, who determined everything for the improvement of his fatherly possession. ”
- Hovhannes Draskhanakertzi , “History of Armenia” [1]

Vasak Ishkhanik (date of birth. Unknown. - d. C. 892–893 [2] ) - prince, overlord of Syunik [3] . He was captured and together with other Armenian princes [4] sent into exile in the middle of the 850s by the Arab commander Buga . In the years of his absence, with the consent of Ashot Bagratuni, his place was taken by Vasak Gabur [3] - Prince of Gagarkunik. Upon returning, he was again confirmed as a prince, recognizing vassal dependence on the Bagratids [3] . After the restoration of the Armenian kingdom, the Arabs in every possible way encouraged the centrifugal aspirations of the Armenian feudal lords, but, according to the historian Syunik Stepanos Orbelian , Vasak “did not want to inherit the name of the rebel”, remaining faithful to the Armenian king [5] . The power was inherited by brother Ashot [6] .
