Family
Maria Francesca Elizabeth Carlotta Giuseppina was born in Paris to the family of Prince Carl Emmanuel of Savoy-Carignano and Maria Christina of Saxony , granddaughter of the Polish king Augustus III . Her elder brother was Carl Albert , the future king of the kingdom of Sardinian , and her nephew was Victor Emmanuel II , the first king of united Italy.
Marriage
On May 28, 1820, she married the Austrian Archduke Rainer , viceroy of the Lombardo-Venetian kingdom . Eight children were born in marriage:
- Maria Carolina (February 6, 1821 - January 23, 1844), died unmarried
- Adelgeyda (June 3, 1822 - January 20, 1855), who in 1842 married Sardinian king Victor Emmanuel II , later - the first king of united Italy
- Leopold Ludwig (June 6, 1823 - May 24, 1898), who in 1864–1868 was commander-in-chief of the Austro-Hungarian fleet
- Ernst Karl (August 8, 1824 - April 4, 1899), Field Marshal Lieutenant
- Sigismund Leopold (January 7, 1826 - December 15, 1891), Field Marshal Lieutenant
- Rainer Ferdinand (January 11, 1827 - January 27, 1913), Austrian Minister-President in 1859–1861
- Heinrich Anton (May 9, 1828 - November 30, 1891), Field Marshal Lieutenant
- Maximilian Karl (January 16, 1830 - March 16, 1839)
