“Vampire”, along with the operas “ Hans Geiling ” and “ Templar and Jew ”, is considered one of Marschner's best works. [3] Here, as in Hans Geiling, everyday scenes are combined with ominous fiction . [4] The most vivid arias in the opera are Malvina's aria in the first act and Aubrey's aria in the second. [2]
In 1992, based on the opera, a soap opera of the same name was staged, the text of which was written by Charles Hart . [5] The soap opera was broadcast in parts on the BBC channel.

Story
Act 1
During the coven, the vampire Lord Ruthven learns that if he does not sacrifice three virgins within 24 hours, he will die. His first victim is the girl Jante, the daughter of John Berkeley. The father finds her body in a cave next to the vampire and manages to injure him. The wounded Ruthven finds his old debtor Edgar Aubrey and takes out the vampire at his request to the moonlight, which saves his life.
The next morning, Aubrey learns that his beloved Malvina is to marry a certain Count Marsden. Seeing the count, Aubrey recognizes Ruthven in him, but he cannot reveal secrets, as Ruthven tells about how Aubrey saved his life last night. If the secret is revealed within 24 hours, Aubrey will also become a vampire.
Act 2
Ruthwen, under the guise of Count Marsden, begins to seduce Emmy, the wife of George, who serves in the house of Davnautov. Aubrey tries to convince the vampire to abandon Malvina, but he only reminds him of the secret. Aubrey is forced to choose between his life and Malvina. Meanwhile, George turns to Aubrey to persuade Count Marsden to stop courting Emma. Ruthven takes Emma to the forest .
That same night, disheveled George appears in a local hotel and tells people that he found the dead Emma and the vampire standing over her, whom he had injured and left to die in the moonlight.
Rutven returns to the castle for his wedding. Aubrey decides to reveal Rutwen's secret, regardless of the consequences. However, when the clock strikes an hour, the secret expires and Aubrey gives out Rutven. The vampire, failing to complete his mission, falls into hell . Malvina's father gives permission for her marriage to Aubrey.
