Description

Silver pollock is similar to pollock . However, unlike its relative, the lateral line in the silver pollock above the pectoral fins bends [2] . There are no antennae on the lower jaw [3] . The color of the back is black, brown or olive, the lateral line is greenish [4] , and the belly has a silver-gray color [2] . The body length is approximately 75 cm, but can also reach a length of up to 130 cm [4] .

Distribution

The species distribution area extends in the northeast Atlantic from Scandinavia, Iceland through the British Isles to Morocco. In addition, silver pollock lives in the North Sea and in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. It inhabits shelf regions where it lives either pelagically or near a rocky bottom at depths of up to about 200 m. [2] [3] [4]

Lifestyle

The diet is based on herring-like , shrimp ( Pandalidae ) and gerbil (Ammodytidae). From January to May, fish spawning occurs at depths from 100 to 150 m at a water temperature of 6 to 8 ° C. From pelagic drifting eggs, fry appear in a week. The fry spend their first 2–3 years of life near the coast, eating plankton and often forming flocks with pollock of the same size [2] [3] . Life expectancy is approximately 8 years [3] [4] .
