Biography
Alessandro Luciano Bernardi was born in the Italian city of Bologna on March 6, 1920. During World War II, Bernardi was the commander of a parachute battalion. He then received a Ph.D. in agriculture from the University of Bologna .
In 1949, Bernardi emigrated to Venezuela , worked in the country's Ministry of Agriculture. Then he worked at the University of Andean at the Department of Forestry. From 1953 to 1959 , after Leon Croisz resigned, Bernardi was a professor of dendrology at Andean University. He collected more than 8 thousand herbarium specimens from Venezuela and Guyana . In 1960 he moved to the Swiss city of Neuchatel . In the same year he was appointed curator at the Geneva Botanical Garden .
In the early 1960s, Bernardi traveled to Côte d'Ivoire , Liberia , Nigeria , Cameroon , Gabon , Congo , Kenya and South Africa . Then he visited herbaria in the Americas , Europe and Russia . In 1967, he visited New Zealand , Australia , Thailand , the Philippines , Indonesia , Madagascar and the Mascaren Islands . From 1973 to 1975 he studied the flora of India , Pakistan , South Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean . In 1978-1979, together with Egidio Ankisi collected plant samples in Paraguay and Argentina .
In 1982, she retired, but in 1986 returned to the Geneva Botanical Garden to continue studying the plants of the Istodov family of South America and the flora of the laurel of Paraguay. Luciano Bernardi died on December 1, 2001 in Geneva .
