It consisted of ten stages, like the previous season. It consisted of the same steps, the only difference being the offset in the Portuguese Rally calendar.

Lancia, with its Stratos HF, won the third consecutive title, winning four victories and almost double the Opel silver medalist. This season was the last triumph of Lancia Stratos in the world rally. Points were awarded to the teams according to the system: if the pilots of one team took 1st, 3rd, and 10th places, then the team will receive only points for the first place, points for the third and tenth will not be given to anyone.
