The Shanghai Defense Force ( born Shanghai Defense Force ) is a military contingent created by the British government to protect the lives and property of foreign nationals in the Shanghai International Settlement during the civil war of the 1920s in China .
After the Xinhai Revolution of 1912, China was divided between rival military groups. The Kuomintang Party , with the aim of uniting the country by military means, began in 1926 the Northern Expedition . At the end of the year, the NRA troops entered the Wuhan tripartite , and on January 1, 1927, Hankow was declared the Kuomintang new capital of China. On January 4, 1927, the city masses together with the NRA fighters seized the territory of the English concession in Hankow.
In order to prevent such plundering of British property in Shanghai, at the request of the commander of the Chinese station in February 1927, the Shanghai Defense Forces were created under the command of Major General Sir John Duncan. For the quartering of troops, Royal College was requisitioned, and the army hospital was also located there. To provide air support, the Royal Air Force created the Chinese Royal Air Force Command in Hong Kong .
The intensity of the situation has decreased in August. In December 1927, the Shanghai Defense Forces were disbanded.
