The term homophile ( -phile from the Greek. Φιλία - love ) is considered more neutral, since it is not associated with the word sex . The term was coined by the German astrologer, writer and psychoanalyst Karl-Gunther Heimsot in 1924 and was first mentioned in his doctoral dissertation “Hetero- and Homophiles” ( German: Hetero- und Homophilie ). In the 1950s and 60s, the term was widely used by homosexual organizations and the press. Various groups of this period are currently known under the general name homophilic movement .
The term began to fade into the background with the formation of a gay liberation movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the emergence of the Gay Liberation Front organization , whose members coined terms such as gay , lesbian , bisexual, and transgender . Despite this, some homophilic groups survived until the 1980s and 90s, and even to this day.
