Metropolitan Eugene (Karavias) ( Greek: Ευγένιος Καραβίας ; January 27, 1752 , Ithaca - April 10, 1821 , Constantinople ) - Bishop of the Constantinople Orthodox Church , Metropolitan of the City of Anchialos , Holy Martyr.
Biography
Born January 27, 1752 on the then-Venetian-controlled Ithaca Island. He graduated from school on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, after which he left for the Ottoman borders in the city of Smyrna to enter the Evangelical School of Smyrna . In Smyrna he was ordained a priest.
In 1808 he was elected metropolitan of the city of Philippopol . In 1813 he was transferred to the metropolis of the Black Sea city of Anchialos , which in those years still retained a significant part of its indigenous, Greek, population.
In 1816-1818, Karavias was a member of the Synod in Constantinople. Here he was initiated into the secret revolutionary society by Filika Eteriya, his relative, Vasilis Karavias .
The beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821 caught Metropolitan Eugene in Anchialos. Metropolitan Anchialos was one of the few priests who refused to sign under the anathema of the revolution and Alexander Ypsilanti proclaimed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and read the anathema publicly when the Turks demanded it. He was arrested by the Ottoman authorities and imprisoned in Constantinople.
The metropolitan refused to answer the questions of the Turks who interrogated him with the words: “I don’t answer the barbarian in order to save my life. Let him leave me alone. ”
On the day of the celebration of the Resurrection, April 10, 1821, he was hanged on the central gates of the Ecumenical Patriarchate together with Patriarch Gregory and the Metropolitan of Ephesus Dionysius and Nicomedia Anastasius [1] .
