According to the plot of the game, the Third Reich launched the nuclear program "Gotterdmermerung" and even assembled a nuclear reactor in Berlin . The player needs to destroy him and destroy the plans of the Germans.
The game was negatively perceived by critics and received low marks from gaming publications. This is the first computer game about World War II, created on the Unreal Engine 3.0 . The soundtrack to the game was written by American composer Jason Graves , who was later involved as a music author in projects such as FEAR 3 and Dead Space 2 . Before the release of Hour of Victory, the developers positioned the game fairly high and set it apart from the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor game series, claiming that “this is like Indiana Jones compared to Saving Private Ryan ” [5] .
Gameplay
General Information
Hour of Victory is a first-person shooter based on the events of the Second World War. Action shooter takes place in North Africa and Europe. Throughout the game, the enemy characters are soldiers of the Third Reich , and the player is one of three fighters: commando soldier, sniper, spy. In order to counter the enemy, the player is given the opportunity to use a large number of weapons, control tanks and anti-aircraft guns. Hour of Victory gameplay is similar to the features of the games Commandos: Strike Force and Call of Duty 2 . From the first, the developers borrowed the number of main characters, the line of sight and the level of noise from the enemy characters, from the second - an automatic restoration of the level of health, which takes about a minute [6] , and a “crushed narrative structure” [7] . The game has a problem with control, when after the in-game video the character spontaneously starts to move forward. In addition, frequent “departures to the system” are noted [4] . The game has simple controls thanks to an intuitive interface [8] . The save function is not available to the player directly, the game is recorded automatically at certain checkpoints ( checkpoint ) [9] . Total gameplay takes 4-5 hours [10] .
In Hour of Victory , in the version for both the Xbox 360 and the PC, a system of achievements is built in, which consists in performing a number of minor tasks, overcoming certain plot turns, etc. Earned achievements do not give any advantages during the passage, they are only marked in network statistics Xbox Live . Since the release of the game, there are 50 achievements associated with the campaign and multiplayer [11] .
Characters
One of the features of the gameplay Hour of Victory is the presence of three playable main characters, each of which has unique abilities. The first of them - Lieutenant William Ross ( eng. William Ross ) - British special forces and a member of the SAS special forces , able to move weights, freeing his way. In addition, he has a large stock of health compared to other characters. The second is Sergeant Calvin Blackbull ( Eng. Calvin Blackbull ) - US Army Ranger and Sniper. Blackbulb is able to hold his breath for a long time [6] , therefore, when playing for this character, the sniper rifle sight does not tremble while aiming [10] . Plus, he has the skill of using a climbing hook ("cats") and can climb buildings, walls, etc., but not everywhere, but only in some specially marked places [12] . The third is Major Ambrose Taggert ( English Ambrose Taggert ) - an operative of the Bureau of Strategic Services of the USA , intelligence officer. This character is able to hide in shelters, so that it becomes invisible to enemies. His skills are also unique: opening locks and cutting barbed wire . Some levels in the Hour of Victory player can go in different ways, using the unique abilities of one of the characters [6] , that is, not all areas of the location are available, for example, Taggert, it is possible for the player to get there only by playing for Blackpool. But even with a variety of characters, the tactics of passing are almost the same [10] . At the beginning of most levels, the player is offered a choice of which of the three heroes to play, but there are some missions where the player is deprived of this opportunity, since they are designed to be passed by a certain character. For example, the level “Escape” ( eng. The Breakout ) is intended for passing by Taggert, and the mission “Battle of the Titans” ( eng. Clash of the Titans ) is exclusively Blackboole.
Enemies and Weapons
In addition to the simple soldiers of the Third Reich, the player also encounters their commanders, who are an important element in coordinating the behavior of the enemy. They can control other soldiers, order them to use overwhelming fire, based on the position of the player, and use other advanced tactics. In the absence of these commanders, other soldiers conduct a less concerted attack and pay more attention to self-preservation [13] . Enemies have three levels of attack, which are included depending on the noise level produced by the player. Each enemy character located nearby is marked on a mini-radar, located on the game interface window, with the corresponding color: green, orange and red, which means the level of the enemy's attack [8] . In the course of the passage, the player confronts not only infantry troops, but also aircraft and armored vehicles, such as Tiger tanks, off-road Volkswagen Tour 82 (Kübelwagen) vehicles and Junkers Ju 88 bombers [14] . Each of the main characters carries with them two types of weapons. Ross has a Webley Mk VI revolver and self-loading M1A1 carbine in the arsenal, Blackbul’s Springfield M1903 rifle with a telescopic sight and a M1911 pistol (A1) , Taggert (the only one of the characters wears cold weapons) - a STEN submachine gun and knives. There are other types of weapons in the game: the American Sherman medium tank [14] , an anti-aircraft gun, a heavy machine gun, the Third Reich StG 44 assault rifle, the German MG 42 single machine gun , the American M1 Garand self-loading rifle, Panzer Shrek anti-tank weapons, and combat gun ( born Trench gun ) and grenades [15] . By controlling a tank, a player can fire not only from a tank gun , but also from a large-caliber cannon. Apart from grenades, the main character is able to carry only two types of weapons in the arsenal [9] .
Multiplayer
There are three types of multiplayer modes in the game: “ Team Fight ” ( English Deathmatch ), “ Capture the Flag ” and “Devastation” ( English Devastation ). In "Devastation", players fight for possession of a bomb, using which, it is necessary to blow up the three targets of the enemy team - the generators. The team that first destroyed all enemy generators wins. Multiplayer battles are deployed on six maps, similar in design to levels in the game. In this mode, the main characters of the campaign and their unique abilities are not available. Instead, the player appears to be a fighter of one of the national armies: British, American, Nazi or Soviet. Depending on the map, the type of army may change. For example, in North Africa, the allies are represented by British troops, and in Berlin - by the Soviet. In multiplayer, there is the same wide choice of weapons as in single player mode, but with the exception of grenades that were removed by developers to increase interest in gameplay, as often the gameplay in multiplayer mode comes down to “throwing” grenades [16] . Also in command mode there are tank control [1] and automatic recovery of health. Multiplayer is implemented via System Link or Xbox Live with support for up to 12 players [17] .
Story
The plot of the game is divided into three campaigns: "The liberation of Al-Shatara", "Attack on the castle Festenburg" and "Extreme measures."
The liberation of al-Shatara
Major Coleman : A couple of years ago, the Germans launched a nuclear program, code-named "Gotterdammerung." Ross : "Gottermeorung"? Well, minced meat. Taggert : Gotterdammerung. This is Wagner's opera. Twilight of the Gods. End of the world. Ross : Like I said, minced [18] . |
- Conversation of Major Coleman with officers from the introductory video to the company “Liberation of Al-Shatar”. |
1942 [19] . A certain British military commander dictates a letter to the corporal, which will need to be sent in three copies to three officers of the American and British armies: Kelvin Blackbull, Ambrose Taggert and William Ross (see the section “Characters”). According to the contents of the letter, all three were ordered to arrive on May 15 at the British Air Force airbase located in Al-Shatar, Cyrenaica , Libyan colonies , where they will be transferred to the location of Major Coleman’s command. Upon the arrival of the officers at the indicated place, the major tells them that a couple of years ago the Germans launched a nuclear program under the code name Gottermermerung ( German Götterdämmerung ), so named after the opera of the same name by German composer Richard Wagner . At this time, the alarm is heard - the German troops broke through in Al-Shatar. From this moment begins the first campaign. In the end, the British forces, together with the protagonists of the game, beat off Al-Shatar and destroy the German troops that invaded there.
Attack on the castle Festenburg
1944 [19] . Protagonist officers in the headquarters of a certain American military commander. He tells them about the secret documents found on board the "Zig", which the officers flooded last year. Judging by the information in them, the main ideologue of the program "Gotterdmermerng" is the Danish physicist Dr. Martin Fielder, whose family was taken hostage by the Nazis, and he is forced to take part in the project. The Germans keep a doctor in the castle of Festenburg, in the Bavarian Alps in Germany [19] . He needs to be saved, but the American command cannot land troops there because of strong anti-aircraft cover. Assignment assign officers. This is where the second campaign of the game begins.
Officers enter the castle grounds in a cable car . There, Taggert alone enters through the sewer system of the castle in the cellar of Festenburg, where Dr. Fielder is confined in a solitary cell. After giving him a weapon, Taggert together with him gets out of the basement. On the surface, Ambrose meets the rest of the officers. Then he and the doctor get to the castle courtyard and, having stolen a German tank, leave Festenburg.
Extreme measures
1945 Soviet troops are already in Berlin. The protagonists arrive at the headquarters of the Soviet colonel Ivanov, where they learn from him that Dr. Fielder (saved in the previous campaign) is engaged in the creation of a nuclear bomb. Also, the colonel reports the existence of a nuclear reactor in Berlin, and with his defeat the Germans will cause a chain reaction in it. The defeat of the Nazis very soon, as the Soviet Army will win in the coming days. The Germans know about this and can launch a reactor at any time.
The main characters, along with soldiers of the Soviet Army and T-34 tanks, enter Berlin. But tanks can not drive further down the street because of the ambush of German rocket launchers. They are successfully neutralized by Blackpool, freeing the way. Protagonists get to the university library, steal reactor drawings from there, then find the reactor itself, disrupt its ventilation system, thereby destroying it.
The heroes had another task - to catch and deliver alive some high-ranking Nazi Shtekler. They penetrate into the building of the Reichkanzerie, where he hides. Heroes drive Shtekler into his own office, but they are stunned by the explosion. The building is destroyed. Along with Shtekler, they are now opposed by detachments of German soldiers and tanks. When killing Shteklera game ends.

Xbox 360 version
To make Hour of Victory more realistic, game producer Jeremy Ray ( born Jeremy Ray ), who previously worked on the platform The Lost Vikings 2 , read many books on World War II and listened to recorded interviews with veterans. Jeremy said that when creating a shooter, he and the development team were inspired by such films as “ Where the Eagles Nest ” and the Indiana Jones series, and tried to make the gameplay similar to the action of these films [20] .
During the preliminary testing of the game by the focus group, it turned out that the players give sympathy to only one of the three characters and pass the missions only by this hero, without having tried to play for the other. In this regard, the developers added to the game special levels, sharpened by a particular character, to prevent players from focusing only on one character [20] .
A single-player campaign and multiplayer created two different development teams [20] .
The soundtrack to the game was written by American composer Jason Graves , who before work with the shooter Hour of Victory had already created musical accompaniment for games such as Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and Heroes of Might and Magic V , and then to FEAR 3 and Dead Space 2 [21] .
Brendan Donnison ( English Brendan Donnison ) answered for the procedure of sounding and selection of votes for her. In total, 10 actors took part in the dubbing, two of whom (Roman Latipov and Yuri Krucenko) were voiced by Soviet soldiers, and the remaining eight of all the other characters in the game: Michael N. Harbor, John Eastman, Adam Sopn, Danny McCall, Miles Richardson, Harry Pecoccus, Nigel Pickengton and Dan Roberts [22] .
For the first time, the publisher of the game Midway Games announced to journalists about the development of the Hour of Victory behind closed doors at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2006 [23] . The first official mention of the game took place at the “2007 Midway Gamers' Day” event in January 2007 at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas . After the demonstration of the MMORPG trailer, Lord of the Rings Online , executive producer Mark Caldwell took the stage and introduced the new game Hour of Victory , showing its trailer and describing the concept of gameplay. Next came Midway CEO and President David Zucker of Midway, who announced spending over $ 100 million on a game plan for next-generation consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 , Wii ) and PC. In support of the above, he referred to the Hour of Victory [24] . Midway also emphasized the exclusivity of the game for the Xbox 360 console, informing that it was not yet priced at the retail price, but will go on sale this summer [25] . Midway planned to generate $ 29 million in revenue in April-June 2007 through retail sales of Hour of Victory , which was scheduled for release in June, and the Mortal Kombat: Armageddon fighting game ported to the Wii platform on May 29 of the same year [26] . The demo version of the game should have appeared on May 30, 2007 on the Xbox Live Marketplace [27] , but according to Midway Games, technical corrections were made to the game at the very last moment, and it was released on June 1 in the size of 938 MB [28] . The demo version allowed players to try out all three protagonists of the game at the level in North Africa [27] . The Xbox 360 version of Hour of Victory has sold around 16,000 copies worldwide [29] .
Microsoft Windows version
The first mention of the development of the Hour of Victory version with an age rating of T (Teen) for the Microsoft Windows platform came from the ESRB rating system, despite the fact that the publishing company Midway insisted that the game be released in the version exclusively for the Xbox 360 console [30] . In the United States, the PC version was never published [31] .
Localization of the game in Russia was carried out by the company “ New Disc ”. On the territory of the Russian Federation Hour of Victory was released on February 28, 2008 exclusively in the version for the Microsoft Windows platform. The game went on sale in jewelry and gift wrapping [32] [33] . Dubbing localizers left original, adding only subtitles and translating the in-game menu. Magazine " Igromaniya " rated localization of 2 points out of 3 [7] .

General Information
Hour of Victory uses in its work two game engines: Unreal Engine 3.0 from Epic Games and PhysX from AGEIA . The last of them is responsible for the physical special effects, so that the game has a rather realistic plastic of the characters' fall [12] . About using the Unreal Engine 3.0, Midway company reported to the press in January 2007 at the event “2007 Midway Gamers' Day”. The same engine was used by Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 [25] , released around the same time as Hour of Victory . Through the use of the Unreal Engine 3.0, the game has a number of destructible elements in each level [13] and realistic highlights on metal surfaces [12] . Hour of Victory is the first computer game about World War II, created on the Unreal Engine 3.0 [35] .
Critic reviews
According to the statements of some game editions, the developers of N-Fusion Interactive could not get the maximum benefit from the capabilities of the engines used, so that, according to them, the game has poor-quality, blurry textures, bad special effects and “brick” faces of the characters. Critic Dan Leahy from GameSpy website wrote in his review of Hour of Victory that this game is “a perfect example of using a good licensed engine (Unreal) by bad console developers from N-Fusion ” [36] . A similar opinion was expressed by Alexander Tarakanov from the magazine " LKI ": "The picture <...> is a great example of how not too direct hands can ruin a great graphics engine" [10] . Tom Orry, a browser from the VideoGamer website, commented on the use of the game engine: "The developers of N-Fusion Interactive took the design of the era of 32-bit video games and stuck it in Unreal Engine 3" [37] . Kyle Ackermann from the blog on gaming themes "Frictionless Insight" noted that the use of the engine did not meet its expectations: "Given that the game is built on the Unreal Engine 3, we can hope to see acceptable weapons and multiplayer. However, this is not the case. ” [38]
From the video review of the Gameland.ru site on Hour of Victory :
In the glorious family of PC-games on the Unreal Engine 3, a freak appeared [39] .
Also, some reviewers critically reacted to the work of the physics engine PhysX. Alexander Sadko, an Igromania magazine reviewer, noted that “bodies are tumbling quite naturally, although they sometimes freeze in unbelievable postures” [12] . And according to the video review of the Gameland.ru site, some of the rifles dropped from the hands of enemies fall strictly perpendicular to the floor, helmets hang in the air, and the dead soldiers, falling, “stand on the bridge” [39] .

Igromania magazine rated the game 2.5 points out of 10, calling Hour of Victory "the worst anti-advertising Unreal Engine 3.0". The magazine also noted the punchedness of the game, accusing of imitating the Call of Duty series , a low level of artificial intelligence (“a bunch of Fritz with the intelligence of the Baltic oyster”) and “mediocre” use of the Unreal Engine 3.0. Only sound (5 points) and control (7 points) [4] were non-negatively rated. The magazine gave an assessment of the Russian localization of the game from " New Disc ", awarding it with two points out of three. On the translation, he responded that he "sometimes limping, but in general, not bad" [7] .
The magazine " The Best Computer Games " called the game "a clone of Call of Duty " [6] and accused her of excessive pathos. Plus, the magazine criticized the undeveloped artificial intelligence of enemy characters, level design, poorly balanced maps in network mode, and too long a health regeneration, noting that the only advantage of the game is that it can be completed "in four or five hours." Also, the magazine did not like the “not too exciting” and inconsistent plot of the shooter: “First we help the scientist escape from captivity; in the next mission we are already trying to stop the German scientists who want to blow up a nuclear reactor ... " [10]
The Absolute Games internet portal honored the shooter with a 40% (sluggish) 100% score, calling it a Medal of Honor clone "with a nondescript picture, oak characters and sample gameplay", as well as "boring and technically obsolete", believing that it was a failure the game does not even fix the multiplayer. The website called the graphics and special effects of the project “penny” and “in the best traditions of the 90s of the last century”. Some features of the gameplay were perceived negatively: in particular, the ability to carry no more than two types of weapons in the arsenal and the “console system of preservation at checkpoints, forcing them to go through solid pieces” [9] .
PC Games magazine rated the game with 5.0 points out of 10. The observer criticized “disgusting level design”, “unsightly” character models, the work of the game and physics engines, the irrationality of some plot points, and the inconsistency of historical reality, eventually calling Hour Of Victory is not a game, but a “complete disappointment” and “the weakest FPS on the Unreal Engine 3.0 engine today.” Despite all the shortcomings found, the magazine highlighted some of the advantages of the shooter: a user-friendly interface (6.5 points out of 10), music (6.5 / 10) and the ability to go through one mission with three characters [57] .
Foreign editions
The GameSpot website gave the game a rating of 2.0 (terrible) out of 10, noting a huge number of errors in the game, light and short missions, as well as “ugly graphics that make characters look like hideous zombies”. In general, the review from GameSpot was sharply negative in relation to the game. Jeff Gerstmann ( eng. Jeff Gerstmann ), who wrote it, pointed out at the end of his review that the garbage "has a place in the gutter, not on the shelves." GameSpot singled out only one virtue of Hour of Victory : “fortunately, no one forces you to play this game” [1] .
The IGN website awarded the game 5.7 points out of 10 (mediocre), criticizing a number of gross errors in the work of artificial intelligence and linear design of levels, thanks to which the player can “run the whole game if he wants” without ever shooting. On the multiplayer mode IGN responded that he "is not worthy of even a free Xbox Live subscription" [17] .
The GameSpy website honored the game with one star out of five (poor), noting, among other things, unlike other reviewers and reviewers (“Gambling”, “GameSpot”) poor management. The site also highlighted weak gameplay, outdated visual effects and a “half-baked multiplayer”, introducing that plus games: “thanks to World War II, we still live in a free country and are not obliged to play it” [36] .
The Worthplaying.com website awarded a score of 4.0 out of 10. Among the minuses, he singled out a confusing storyline, the same sound of shots from both machine guns and rifles, “deformed faces” and unnatural movements of characters. Among the advantages - a high level of complexity that compensates for the brokenness of artificial intelligence, good sound and those levels that are sharpened by a particular character [48] .
The site “ GamesRadar ” rated the game at 4 points out of 10 (defective), accused it of the practical necessity of only one character (William Ross) with three, “an abundance of mistakes” and “super dull AI ”. He also criticized the work of the physics engine, saying that enemies perform "truly hysterical break dance while they die." Among other things, the site positively noted the "cool" sound effects [45] .
The Eurogamer website gave the game 2 points out of 10, noting that the “pompous” orchestral soundtrack “looks like a joke of its authors.” The site as a whole negatively responded about the shooter, in particular, about artificial intelligence: “Germans are running around like children suffering from dizziness,” adding at the end that the game should not be called Hour of Victory (from English - “Victory Hour”), but “Several Hours of Abject Misery” (from English - “Several hours of terrible torment”) [43] .
Website "Videogamer" put the shooter 4 points out of 10 for "poor artificial intelligence" and "stupid missions." The review mentioned only one plus: "moderately impressive visual effects." In general, the site’s website’s graphics have been very negative [37] . A blog on gaming themes “Frictonless Insight” gave the game 1.5 stars out of 10, noting the loading of levels taking too much time. Basically, he singled out the same drawbacks as in the reviews of other publications: outdated graphics, “primitive” sound, “terrible” artificial intelligence, and others. [38]
