Intraspecific taxonomyFour subspecies are distinguished: nominative subspecies - T. l. larvata , distributed from southeastern Mexico (the eastern slopes of the mountains in Tabasco , northern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas ), Belize and eastern Guatemala south to the far north of Costa Rica ; T. l. centralis is common in Costa Rica (on the eastern slopes of the mountains) and in western Panama (in Bocas del Toro , in the north of the provinces of Veraguas and Cocle ); T. l. fanny - in eastern Panama from the province of Colon and the Panama Canal Zone east to Colombia and south to western Ecuador ; T. l. franciscae - in Costa Rica and western Panama [1] .
HabitatsPurple mask tanagra live on plantations, in subtropical and tropical low and mountain humid and highly degraded forests , as well as humid shrubbery, at an altitude of up to 1200 meters above sea level [3] .
