Revenge (also known as Revenge ) is an American drama television series created by Mike Kelly , starring Madeline Stowe and Emily VanCamp . The series premiered on September 21, 2011 on ABC [1] [2] and is currently on air for the second season. The plot is based on a free interpretation of the novel by Alexander Dumas " Count of Monte Cristo " [3] .

The plot focuses on the rich Grayson family living in the Hamptons, on Long Island, New York. Many years ago, Conrad and Victoria Grayson set up their friend, David Clark, blaming him for organizing a terrorist act that led to mass deaths. David was convicted and died in prison. Years later, his daughter, Amanda Clark, returns to the city under the name Emily Thorne to avenge the responsibility for the death of his father.

The series was received favorably by critics, and achieved success in television ratings. On October 13, 2011, after four episodes were aired, ABC extended the show for a full season of 22 episodes [4] . Madeleine Stowe, who was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the category " Best Actress of a Drama Series " for her role as Victoria Grayson, received special praise from critics. [5] In Russia, the first season under the original name was broadcast on the Fox Life cable channel, and then under the name “Revenge” on the Domashny broadcast channel [6] . In total, the series is broadcast in more than fifty countries of the world. On May 10, 2012, ABC extended the series for the second season [7] , which premiered on September 30 [8] .

Madeline Stow performed the role of Victoria Grayson

At the beginning of the series, there were nine permanent characters: Victoria Grayson ( Madeleine Stowe ) - “Queen of the Hamptons”, the glamorous and powerful matriarchy of the Grayson family; the main antagonist of the series Emily Thorne ( Emily VanCamp ); a brilliant software inventor, billionaire Nolan Ross ( Gabriel Mann ), who becomes an ally of Amanda in her revenge; the smart and successful hedge manager and CEO of Grayson Global , Conrad Grayson ( Henry Czerny ), who framed David Clark; ambitious event organizer for Victoria Ashley Davenport ( Ashley Madekwe ); Victoria and Conrad's spoiled son Daniel Grayson ( Joshua Bowman ), who has alcohol problems; Amanda’s childhood friend Jack Porter ( Nick Wexler ), who is still in love with her but will not recognize her in Emily; the seventeen-year-old daughter of Victoria and Conrad, Charlotte Grayson ( Krista B. Allen ), dating poor guy Declan; and Declan Porter ( Connor Paolo ), Jack's brother and friend Charlotte [16] . The main characters of the series are Victoria Grayson, whose role was played by Madeline Stow, and Emily Thorne / Amanda Clark performed by Emily VanCamp. Victoria is the main target of Amanda's revenge.

Emily VanCamp played the role of Amanda Clark

In the pilot episode, top model, as well as actress Amber Valletta , played the role of Lydia Davis, Amanda's first retaliation victim. Although initially the appearance of the actress was planned as a guest , she was subsequently upgraded to the status of a recurring character [17] . Valletta's character storyline continued in subsequent episodes. She was the central hero in the fifth episode called Guilt , in which she took the place of the central antagonist, first threatening Emily with the disclosure of her secrets, and then Victoria and Conrad, saying that she would tell everyone the truth about their involvement in the crash of flight 197. Although her plans disclosure was not destined to come true. Frank Stevens, in love with Victoria, enters Lydia’s apartment and tries to kill her [18] . During the fight, she falls from the roof of the house, but remains alive, but partially loses her memory [19] . The role of Amanda's late father, David, in the flashback scenes in the pilot episode was originally played by Mark Blucas , but he was later replaced by James Tupper , due to the fact that Blucas got a permanent role in the television series Necessity of Cruelty [20] , and Emily Elin Lind got the role of Amanda in her childhood [21] .

In July 2011, Max Martini got the role of Frank Stevens, the former head of the Grayson security service [22] . He was killed by the real Emily Thorne when he tried to unearth information about Emily / Amanda [23] . In early August, Robbie Amell was cast as Adam Connor, the wealthy boyfriend of Charlotte, who is present in the first few episodes, and whom she later casts for Declan [24]. Later, Ashton Holmes joined the series in the role of Tyler Baroll, Daniel’s mysterious friend at Harvard University [25] . As the creator of the series said, the film “ Talented Mr. Ripley ” and, in particular, the character Tom Ripley performed by Matt Damon inspired him to introduce the character into the plot. Although Tyler was first introduced as a wealthy Harvard student, the truth about him later revealed - he had previously been a gay prostitute , and was deceiving his clients for the mercenary purpose. He begins a sexual relationship with Nolan Ross, as well as a partnership with Ashley [23] [26] .

Margarita Levieva played the role of Emily Thorne

In late September, it was announced that Margarita Levieva signed a contract to participate in the series [27] . The actress first appeared in the seventh episode of the first season called Charade as the real Emily Thorne, who changed her name to Amanda Clark when her former prison roommate, Amanda, asked her about it [28] . In the same episode in the series, for the first time, CCA Pounder appears in the role of the head of the juvenile correctional colony Sharon Styles. The actress appeared both in flashback scenes and in the present tense [29] . The heroine Levieva remained in the series and in subsequent episodes. After she kills Frank, she finds Amanda’s house and asks her for help. Amanda decides to send Emily to Paris, and buys her a plane ticket, but she decides to stay in the city under the name of Amanda Clark at the last moment. She meets Jack, first introducing herself as Kara Cole, who later admits that she is Amanda Clark, whom he once knew [30] .

In late October, James McKeffrey was approved for the role of Ryan Huntley, Lydia’s divorce lawyer with her husband, who framed her in court by unveiling a photo sent by Amanda, which captured Lydia and Conrad [31] . Mackaffrey first appeared in the tenth episode, where his character offers his lawyer services to Victoria, who divorces Conrad, and was withdrawn from the series in the thirteenth. Merrin Dungi played the role of Barbara Snow, Conrad's lawyer in divorce proceedings with Victoria. Meanwhile, Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada played the role of Satoshi Takeda, a billionaire, and Amanda's mentor in several episodes, who, at her request, invested fifty million in Grayson Global [32] . In mid-December, it was announced that William Davein would appear on the series as Edward Grayson, Conrad's imperious father, who was coming to discourage his son’s divorce from Victoria. [33] Divane first appeared in the fourteenth episode. The Tony Award winner, Roger Barth , was a guest star in the twelfth episode of season one, and then appeared twice in the series [34] . In late January, it was announced that James Purefoy would play the role of Victoria's potential love interest after she divorced Conrad. Purefoy first appeared in the seventeenth episode of the first season [35] . Meanwhile, Veronica Cartwright played judge Elizabeth Hawthorne [36] , and Tess Harper appeared in the guise of Carol Lin Miller, former secretary of David and Aunt Nolan [37] .

In the second season, it is planned to introduce several characters significant for the plot into the series. The first of these is Emily's mysterious mother, whose role will be played by Jennifer Jason Lee [38] . Victoria's mother and former wife and children of Conrad will also appear. Wendy Crewson will play the role of Helen, a business tycoon who will cross the road to Conrad [39] , and Barry Sloan got the role of Emily's mysterious friend [40] .
