History

In 1954, N.G. Kuznetsov , the Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Navy, initiated the development of an air defense cruiser , which received project number 84. The draft design of the ship was to be ready for the 2nd quarter of 1958 , and the technical draft - by the 1st quarter of 1959 . It was supposed to build a series of 5 cruisers at shipyards number 189 and number 444. Commissioning was planned in 1964 . The overall dimensions of Project 84 cruisers were comparable to those of Project 68 cruisers . The hull design is smooth-decked. The total displacement should have been 14-15 thousand tons, the full speed - 32 knots, the cruising range of the economic course - 5000 miles. The armament of a pure artillery cruiser was special. As the main caliber were to use powerful universal 180-mm two-gun tower installations SM-48. According to the project, the elevation angle of the gun was from −3 to +76 degrees, the slant firing range was 36 km, the height reachability was 23 km, the rate of fire was about 9-10 shots per minute. The towers were linearly elevated in two in the bow and stern. In addition to the SM-48, the cruiser was supposed to carry six 100-mm twinned SM-52 artillery mounts and six 57-mm 4-barrel anti-aircraft guns ZIF-75. Both those and others were located alongside. The control of artillery was supposed with the help of one KDP with radar (for firing at sea and air targets) and two firing radars for anti-aircraft caliber (“Foot-B” or “Turret”). Additionally, it was planned to base two Ka-15 helicopters on the ship, for which the under-deck hangar with a lift was intended. After the removal of N. G. Kuznetsov from the post of Commander in Chief, all work on the project 84 cruiser was discontinued.
