Prideaux John Selby ( born Prideaux John Selby ; 1788-1867) is a British ornithologist, botanist, and illustrator.

John Selby was the eldest son of an influential English family. In 1804, his father passed away. In 1806, Selby began his studies at the University College of Oxford University , but left her and went to live in the family estate Addestone . Mostly Selby took care of the family estate, which he sold in 1850. He was married and had three daughters.
Selby is known for his book Illustrations of British Ornithology (1821-1834), the first collection of bird illustrations where they were depicted in their natural size. In addition, he participated in the writing of “ Illustrations of Ornithology ” (1825-1843) and “ A History of British Forest-trees ” (1842). Together with William Jardine and George Johnston, he founded Magazine of Zoology and Botany .
Many of his published illustrations were copied from copies from his extensive collection. His collections were sold in 1885 and lost. The South African birds, which were in the collection of Andrew Smith , were transferred to the Zoological Museum of the University of Cambridge.
