Daniel Christopher Burbank ( born July 27, 1961 , Manchester , Connecticut , USA ) is an American astronaut, captain of the United States Coast Guard , and the second coast guard astronaut after Bruce Melnik .

Biography

Born in Manchester , Connecticut , raised in Tolland , another city in the same state, received his secondary education there. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering ( US Coast Guard Academy , 1985) and a master of aviation science ( Embry-Riddle Aviation University , 1990).

Daniel Burbank served in the coast guard from May 1985 to April 2009, when he resigned [1] .

Spaceflight

He applied to the 14th and 15th sets of NASA astronauts; in 1996, he was selected as a candidate for astronauts of the 16th set. After two years of general space training, he received the qualification of a flight specialist. Engaged in ISS operations at NASA’s Operations Planning Division.

Burbank participated as a space shuttle flight specialist. The first is Atlantis STS-106 in September 2000, and the shuttle delivered cargo to the ISS for the operation of the first permanent crew . The second flight was Atlantis STS-115 , in September 2006, during which the P3 / P4 solar panels were delivered to the station.

In August 2011, he was declared fit for space flight as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft, which launched on November 14, 2011. Since November 16, Burbank was included in the crew of the ISS-29 flight engineer 5, then on November 21, Daniel became the commander of the long-term crew of the ISS-30 . He returned to Earth on the Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft on April 27, 2012.

The total time spent in space after three flights is 188 days 21 hours 47 minutes.

Personal life

Family

Married, two children.

Hobbies

Skiing, hiking, sailing, amateur astronomy, playing the guitar.

Being a radio amateur, he used the callsign KC5ZSX [2] , later he received the callsign K1DCB [3] .
