Castrol Index is a system for collecting and analyzing statistics to evaluate the tactical and technical actions of individual players and teams in general.
The system uses special mathematical formulas that evaluate the various performances of players in terms of their individual actions, as well as assisting partners. The number of points awarded to each player depends on the segment of the field on which the game episode takes place. If the ball is in close proximity to the goal , the coefficient increases, since at this moment the probability of a goal increases.
An interrupted or inaccurately given transmission can play both in favor of the player who intercepted it, and against someone who clumsily passed the ball. If the attacker did not score a goal from the penalty spot , the Castrol Index will return the most points to the goalkeeper . The system also evaluates the usefulness of defensive actions. Tackle , selection and removal of the ball are evaluated in terms of utility for the whole team. If the defender took the ball and successfully launched the attack, he will receive more points than if he had taken the ball out of the sideline. As a result of the match, players are assigned a score on a ten-point scale.
This system was first applied in 1966, during the World Cup in England . Over the years, the Castrol Index system has analyzed 12 world football championships, studying the actions of players in each match. Thanks to this, 11 of the best players of our time were identified [1] .
Once a year, the Castrol Index system identifies the 11 best players in the top 5 European leagues and shows a selection of experts who are past football players such as Alan Shearer , Pierluigi Collina , Marcel Desailly , Ottmar Hitzfeld and others.
Before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Castrol Index system predicted Spain and Brazil would enter the final. As a result, Spain won the cup, and the Brazilian national team was stopped by the Netherlands national team in the quarter finals of the tournament. [2] .
